Dr. Google: Increased wait time, decreased health

One thing I have learned from working in a veterinary hospital is that diagnosing an illness takes an incredible amount of skill. It takes knowledge based on years of practice, posing the right questions towards owners, and deductive medical reasoning. Unfortunately, despite advances in technology, techniques, and knowledge, studies have shown a decrease in veterinary visits in both dogs and cats, and pets’ overall health has decreased. Preventable problems such as flea infestations and dental disease are up (see
http://articles.dailypilot.com/2011-08-09/entertainment/tn-dpt-0810-petcolumn-20110809_1_cat-visits-cat-owners-cats-indoors for more statistics). What could cause the decrease in veterinary visits, a person might ask. One issue is that owners have more advice accessible through the Internet than ever before and, what can start out as research or curiosity can turn into a waiting game or an unnecessary treatment for your pet.

Many people in medicine have deemed this Internet issue: “Dr. Google.” “Dr. Google” is uncredentialed. It cannot otoscope your pet’s ears, or observe your pet’s x-rays with a practiced eye. Stories of misdiagnosing pets, based solely on a few symptoms typed out, are a common conversation in any hospital. The problem comes when advice online causes a person to try an at-home or pet store remedy, sometimes for an extended period of time, instead of getting a much-needed prescription, diagnostics or the opinion of a trained professional.

Our blog is striving to inform. We are unable to diagnose pets online, and we offer information in the hope that people will not replace valuable cognitive and communication skills of doctor visits with advice found online.  If you ever have a concern, feel free to give Community Pet Hospital or your local veterinarian a call.
